“Ohhhh it has the wooden wick!” Or “Do ALL your candles have the wooden wick?” We get these kinds of questions and comments all the time and I havent met one person who is not excited about the wooden wick that makes a snap, crackle, pop sound when it burns! But what is so cool about these campfire wicks? And what sets them apart from the regular Cotten wicks?
First of all, what IS the difference?
Wooden wicks are thin slabs or tubes of wood crafted precisely for candle making. They create a beautiful crackling sound, but need a bit more attention.
Cotton wicks are braided cotton strands, dipped in wax and compressed to hold their shape. Cotton wicks often create a lower costing candle.
To better answer the question we are asking today, let’s go over some differences between the wooden and cotton wick!
lighting Your candle
Both the wooden wick and the cotton wick take the flame easily on the first lighting, however on the second lighting the wooden wick will need a bit more time and care! Cotton wicks, you can trim the wick and it will light within 3 seconds.
In fact the wooden wick candle may take up to 2 or 3 tries to relight, as they require more time for the heat to penetrate the wax! They Can be extremely stubborn at times!
Wooden Wick vs cotton Wick maintenance
There will always be a small amount of maintenance involved if you want to get the most out of your candle.
Wooden wick:
It is so important for your wooden wick candle to stay lit long enough to create a level surface of melted wax up to the edge of the container. This decreases the risk of your candle creating a tunnel through the center of your wax. Our candles provide you with trimming informations. Wooden wicks require no trimming! In fact you will have a easier light experience of you do not trim the wick between burns! however, In some cases it is necessary to pinch the upper part of the wick where it appears to be splitting apart from the center, removing this part will decrease flame size.
Cotton wick:
Cotton wicks will light within a couple seconds and normally have no Complications. however unlike the wooden wick they require a trim in between each burn, the recommended height is 1/4 inch!
Is there a diffrence in scent throw?
We’ve found that wooden wick candles have a better scent throw when burning. It’s likely because the the candles wick burns lower and smolders. This helps warm the wax around the wick instead of just burning it off quickly that is more likely to happen with a cotton wick.
With cotton wick candles, a taller flame will likely burn up all the fragrance from your wax more quickly!
After reading This You may have concluded that I prefer cotton wicks to wooden wicks.
Truely after all is said and done, crackling wick candles are my personal favorites. They Are TOTALLY WORTH IT!
So if cotton wicks are lower maintenance, why did we choose the wooden wick?
We are always proud to talk about our decision to use wooden crackling wicks and here’s why…
You won’t be surprised to notice that our wooden crackling wicks make a delightful crackling sound When it’s burning! There is nothing more cozy then lighting a candle on a dark evening and hearing the crackling like your burning a fire in your fireplace.
Our wooden wicks are sustainably sourced, and offer a more ego friendly environment then the cotton wicks.
We love how easy wooden wicks are to work with. wooden wicks stand nice and proud through out the pouring and burning process. They also burn more slowly and and evenly, with a lower flame and excellent scent throw.
So now you know, its all about personal preference! we’d love to hear your option on the wooden or cotton wick debate.
